i think it's one of those things that's really sad because they know how beneficial it is, but they make it optional and you have to pay for it. with all of the benefits why can't they just keep it for everyone and use it if needed later down the road, it's saving lives!!!!!!

My daughter is 4, and we did bank her blood 4 years ago. We hope that she will never need it, but it does give us peace of mind. Our second child is due in a few weeks, and we've already purchased the cord blood kit. We're definitely pro banking cord blood, and we know of a family whose son had already benefited from his parents' doing so.

If you have a family history of leukemia, myleoma, lymphoma or know someone getting ready to have a bone marrow transplant, its probably a good idea to privatly bank.
If not, it may not be worth, and you should instead donate to the public bank. You can find out how to do that through your country's marrow donor's program. For the US the site is http://www.marrow.org . If you are in a different country, search for your country's marrow program or email me to help you find it.

I think if your family has any history of serious childhood illness or you have other children suffering a serious illness then I would keep the cord. If your family history is fairly healthy then it may just be another expense. I personally got a great deal of satisfaction from donating the cord blood.
Good Luck and Congrats!

I have been really torn about this. I heard that there is such a slim chance of needing it and it's so expensive to do, but then I was watching that Dr. show this week and there was a little boy on there who had cereabal palsy and they used his own cord blood and it made him so much better. I just don't think I can take the chance of not keeping it. If something ever happened that the cord blood could help I would hate myself for not doing it. I'm thinking we will probably use the public bank instead of a private one so it's less expensive.

My husband and I have been looking into this recently and will most likely decide to do it with a private banking. It's more costly than the public option, but we want to make sure that what we save is for our child and our family only. I think it's a great thing and can only lead to better things in the future. Good Luck with whatever you decide.

I think that it's a great thing to do but it is really expensive, I know my doctor told me it's about 1200 dollars to "harvest" it and I think he said 100 dollars a month to store it after that. I know I can't afford that right now.
